Throughout their careers advocating for animals across diverse cultural contexts, Kahindi and Katherine have each encountered a wide array of remarkable examples of the unique ways in which different people in different places view certain animals with a kind of sanctity or reverence. Whether in Zanzibar where someone will be sentenced to life in prison for injuring or killing a duck, in Northern Kenya where the Samburu tribe revere and ritualize elephants, or the Egyptians worshipping the sacredness of cats, we thought it was worth bringing these historical and contemporary stories of animal sanctity to life as a reminder of the special place animals hold in our social and moral imaginations. If you know of a story of animal sanctity, please take a moment to share it with us to be featured in this space.
